Last month, a new cancer survivors empowerment Ustream broadcast program, called Apital breast cancer night school, was launched in Japan. The Ustream boradcast provides medical information based on scientific evidence with elementary school scene.
Why elementary school scene? That is because for easing survivors' anxiety and making them feel fun to learn medical information. Japanese people feel at ease with elementary school scene. I don't know why. It might be like chocolate chip cookie with hot milk for Europeans and North Americans, something we feel good old day. Anyway, we do.
The program is broadcast every third Wednesday of the month at 9 pm JPT. Hosted by Maiko - fashion model and breast cancer survivor, at right in the photo - and Yoshinori Hirako - managing editor of Asahi-Apital,one of the biggest Japanese health care news site, at left. They invite a doctor as a guest speaker each month. In that program hosts and viewers get lectured from the guest and talk about breast cancer information.
The first guest they invited last month was Dr. Hideko Yamauchi from St. Luke's International Hospital Breast Center, at middle in the photo.
The first Ustream broacast was so successful. Over 1,000 unique viewers watched this program and there are many admiring voice on Twitter. I think it was a very good start for program providers and viewers.
Educating survivors is one of the big tasks for medical institute or cancer advocacy group.Patients have the right to know medical information based on scientific evidence.
However, it's difficult to provide patients with medical information. We all know it's important to know but it's boring and difficult to learn.
But in this program, I think we could overcome the boring problem because of not only for the elementary school scene, but also Ustream boradcast.
Ustream boradcast makes people feel not alone. People can communicate with others on social stream such as Twitter and Facebook in real time. That is a very kind system for people feel alone. We feel good when we learn with friends together...
I uploaded archives on Youtube. Please look at them, language is Japanese though.
